Is Black Friday Bad?

Promoting Black Friday as a newbie sustainable fashion influencer is something to seriously consider. One of the reasons I want to make a change is that I’m frustrated by my constant need to consume and that I’ve been treating clothing as if they were disposable: “Don’t like it anymore? Just buy something new!” I’m not the only one…

Some harsh numbers…

Did you know that 26% of clothing gets disposed of simply because we don’t like it anymore? And that 80% of discarded textiles are doomed for the landfill or incineration, meaning they get dumped or get burned, which releases all kinds of toxins and gases into the atmosphere. All this after an average of only 7 (!) wears.

The environment doesn’t only suffer because of our disposing behaviour, but also due to unnecessary transportation: “Not in the mood to check and measure sizes? I’ll just order 3 sizes and send 2 back!” And there goes yet another DHL truck and maybe even a plane.

Overconsuming during Black Friday

During Black Friday, a lot of overconsuming happens. ‘Too good to resist’ promotions can quickly arouse the need to buy and a lot of impulsive purchases happen. I don’t know about you, but I’m going crazy over all these posts, newsletters and pop-ups telling me that ‘This Friday is my only chance to buy with major discounts!’. It definitely creates FOMO and makes me want to increase my credit card limit. But then I think of the questions.

If the answers are yes and if the item I have my eye on is made fairly and sustainably, it’s a go. I think that in the end it’s about our own consuming behavior and the demand we create as consumers. So I guess shopping during Black Friday doesn’t have to be a bad thing, as long as you really do it consciously and sustainably. Like really, big exclamation point!

In the next post you’ll find some great offers from sustainable brands. A few brands also do something different during Black Friday, like donating and planting trees, which is amazing!

Super excited that this feature is available on my blog. Now you can watch my outfit video’s over here as well and not only at Instagam, whoop!

Conscious approach to fashion

Yes! I’m going to fully focus on conscious & fair fashion!

The way I’ve been promoting fast fashion brands & consuming does not match the person I am today. Fast fashion brands produce fast & cheap, & therefore often work in unethical ways with unethical materials. Humans suffer so we can buy $10 shirts. Even though at some level we’re aware of this, we still buy it because we MUST have it. So supply & demand keep reinforcing each other.

Constant need for more

Where does this constant need for more come from, do we really need all these products? I feel that advertisers but also society focus on things that are missing or that are wrong about our lives & ourselves. Things that can only be fixed when we buy certain products, or when we have a certain lifestyle, job, house, relationship, a certain appearance, and, in terms of fashion, trendy clothing in a certain size.

By trying to meet these unrealistic standards, we’re saying to ourselves that we’re not good as we are. In terms of my own well-being, not feeling good enough is the thing I struggle with most, so this does not sit well with me.

My part in this

I participate in this too, as a consumer & influencer. I influence people to buy things they don’t need from brands that exploit humans. Through this, I am in a way promoting human rights violation & I’m saying you’re not good enough, that you need those jeans or shoes to look as trendy as me.

I felt I couldn’t make a change & still be into fashion. Like I’d have to be a fashion-boycotting activist in order to stand for my beliefs. So I’ve contemplated quitting Instagram until I thought of ways to share healthy style inspiration.

Healthy style inspiration

I want to show you that you don’t need to constantly consume, follow trends, participate in fast fashion, or wear something different every day to look – & FEEL – good. And when you do consume, I hope to inspire you to do it consciously & sustainably.

A conscious & fair approach towards fashion doesn’t mean we’re not allowed to buy clothes or it’s wrong to have an interest in fashion & trends. There’s no shame in wanting to look good! And you can look damn good wearing a combo of old clothes, fair fashion brands & vintage items. I’ll prove it, if you stay tuned!

Vans Shoe-buddy’s

You might think we dressed alike for this shoot. Well, we didn’t, this happens all the time! Okay, we did wear the Vans on purpose as this is an advertisement post for Ziengs, but the rest of the outfit was a coincidence, as usual…

Rick and I simply have the same style! Especially when it comes to shoes. We both love casual sneakers. So when Ziengs asked us to do a duo shoot to celebrate that they’re now selling Vans – our favorite sneaker brand -, we instantly said yes! Couldn’t be a better match for us.

Do you and your partner often wear the same as well?!

In Spring We Wear Birkenstocks

Do you agree or are you one of those Birkenstocks haters? I personally have always loved Birkenstocks! I like chuncky shoes, especially when worn with a tight pair of jeans or a dress, and Birkenstocks are the perfect chunky, yet stylish sandals to me! And the boyfriend agrees – and yet again we have the same pair of shoes…

I got this pair via Ziengs, a Dutch shoes store with the biggest collection of Birkenstocks in The Netherlands! Dus Dutchies, ga snel even kijken 😉
